Practical guidance for parents and caregivers from Family Matters Global.
When a teenager begins to share something difficult, it can be tempting to respond with advice straight away. Yet the first helpful step is often simpler: pause and listen. Giving a young person your attention shows that their thoughts matter and gives you a better understanding of what they need.
Make space for the conversation
Choose a calm moment and put distractions aside. You do not need a perfect speech. Start with an open question such as โWhat has been on your mind?โ or โHow did that feel for you?โ Then allow time for an answer. If your teen is not ready to talk, let them know you are available when they are.
Listen before you respond
Try to hear the whole story without interrupting. You can check that you understood by saying, โIt sounds like that was frustrating. Have I got that right?โ Avoid assuming that you already know what the problem is. Asking โWould you like me to listen, or would you like us to think through it together?โ gives the young person a voice in the conversation.
Keep guidance and boundaries clear
Listening does not mean agreeing with every choice or setting aside family boundaries. Once your teen has been heard, explain your concerns calmly and clearly. Work together on a next step where possible. This allows care, guidance and responsibility to be part of the same conversation.
Try one small step this week
Set aside ten minutes for a conversation without phones or other distractions. Ask one open question, listen to the answer, and thank your teen for sharing. Connection can grow through ordinary moments repeated over time.
